Introducing Glanris’ Chief Science Officer, Dr. Frank Brigano

Glanris is very excited to add Frank Brigano Ph.D to the team.  At Glanris, we are passionate about our greatest natural resource: water.  And there are two things you need to know about Dr. Brigano — he loves nature and he loves water.

“I've always been fascinated with nature. I'm a product of the 70’s and the environmental movement. When I was in school, starting in seventh grade, you did science fairs and I really wanted to be a microbiologist and that is what my training is in.  I did work in water disinfection then just stayed with water,” he explained.

Frank Brigano holds a BA in Biology/Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, a MS in Microbiology from the University of Ohio, and a Ph.D in Environmental Science from University of Cincinnati.  For Frank, his first job in water treatment was meant to be. “After school, I ended up interviewing for a job in Connecticut with a company called Olin that made swimming pool sanitizers. And at the time in the 70’s, there was the concern about chlorine byproducts. And the research work I did was in chlorine dioxide.” he explained. “They said to me they already knew who they were going to hire, but since I worked on chlorine dioxide could I come out and give a seminar. They would pay for the trip but there was no job. I said, okay, because I would get the experience. I ended doing the seminar and, in the end, getting a job there and developing their spa line.”

This kicked off a more than 30 year prestigious career in the water treatment business.  Frank has lead research and product development for Olin Corporation, Culligan International, KX Technologies, and Marmon Water Group, Berkshire Hathaway’s multibillion dollar water division. He holds 19 patents, ranging from filtration cartridges to deionization fluids.  He established the Marmon Water Innovation Center, has served as Chairman of the NSF International Certification Council, and served on the Water Quality Research Foundation (WQRF) Board of Directors. Dr. Brigano has also been namedIndustry Icon“ from Water Quality Products Magazine and received the Lifetime Achievement Award and an Award of Merit from the Water Quality Association.

Frank’s love of water and the environment runs deep. He also serves his community as Commissioner of the town of North Branford Inland Wetlands and Conservation Commission.

When asked about joining Glanris, Frank sees the bigger picture in water use and reuse around the globe. He has worked in water sanitization around the world and has seen the challenges of water conservation and use.

“The beauty of the Glanris material versus other materials that are typically used in drinking water treatment that I'm familiar with, like coconut shells, is that Glanris has multiple functionality. Glanris can remove organics as well as dissolved metals, something coconut shells can’t do. And rice hulls are hugely plentiful globally versus a limited supply of coconuts that only grow in certain regions.  Glanris just makes sense. ”
